Calibrate Finished Solidly To Carry Off Honours in New Zealand Centennial Cup

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (Special).—Though Calibrate deserved all the honours for his win in the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton yesterday, the race was an unsatisfactory one for the stayers because it was run at a muddling pace for the first mile and a-quarter and the pace was on only over the concluding six furlongs.

The £IO,OOO stake, giwn to nake the event one worthy of the Centennial year of the Canterbury province, gave the rare more glamour than usual, but there have been many better Cup contests. Jamell was a surprising win favourite and he was left to make most of the pace. For the greater part of the contest St. Bruno, Paddy Joe and Langham were in close attendance on him, Coral Arc, Pierre, Beaumaris, Biassed, Night Owl and Signify heading the others. Coming into the straight Jamell was bowling along a length in front of Paddy Joe, Valley Gold and St. Bruno, who were racing abreast, Langham and Night Owl being next, then Coral Arc, Pierre, Beaumaris, Renowned and Biassed, the last two being Earldale and Calibrate. Halfway down the straight Jamell and Valley Gold were weakening, St. Bruno and Langham were still there, Pierre was hanging on also, and Calibrate and Earldale were coming on the outside with late runs. Calibrate came to the front at the half-furlong, with Earldale issuing a hot challenge, but Calibrate then had the race won and he held off Earldale by half a length. St. Bruno ran a solid race for third, a length away, and beat Jamell by a head. Langham was fifth and next to finish were Beaumaris, Renowned, Biassed, Valley Gold, Pierre, Signify, Night Owl, The Laird and Coral Arc. Beaumaris ran a great race under his weight and should win the Canterbury Cup on Monday. Coral Arc and Royal Tan were never possibilities, though each was up close enough half a mile from home to have won had they been good enough. Probably the lack of a true pace spoiled their chances. The Wanganui-trained Paddy Joe ran a splendid race for a mile and three-quarters but then dropped out. the hob Decisively The Hob scored a decisive win in the Stewards’ Handicap, in which he was the runner-up to Full Play two years ago. He did not become prominent till , the field reached the course proper, ' where he moved into third place behind Paper Strip and Johnny Peep, the most prominent of the others at this stage being Infinity, Apex and Ptolemy, with Lord Moss and Castlebrae next. Ptolemy went up to head the leaders about a furlong from the finish, but The Hob finished very fast and had the race won 50 yards from the post, his margin at the end being a short length. Te Kooti, who was last but one at the turn, finish- i ed brilliantly to nose Ptolemy out of second money, and Paper Strip was j close up fourth. Trinidad, Castlebrae, Duvaals and Lord Moss were next. 1 Lord Moss hung in badly over the last two furlongs and from that stage was never dangerous. i WELCOME STAKES Wellesley Stakes form at Trentham | was confirmed when the Dunedinowned Timanova gelding Silence defeated Scorned by half a length. Scorned began brilliantly and was the pacemaker, but she was joined at the home turn by Silence, who had lost a little ground when the field crowded up in the first furlong. The race developed into a struggle between Silence and Scorned over the Last two furlongs, and though he took 1 some time to get the upper hand Silence had the filly completely subdued at the finish. Montana beat the others but never looked dangerous. Sinister was a poor fourth, and the others, headed by Hepburn, arrived at intervals. MUDDLING PACE IN DERBY The Derby was run at a muddling pace and developed into a sprint home i from the half-mile, The Unicorn being an easy winner. Dunkirk and Perception were in charge when the field had settled down, but going into the tack the field were all under holds and bunching up, the pace being so slow that The Unicorn ran through to the lead near the six furlongs. His rider kept the pace down till near the home turn where The Unicorn was closely attended by St. Columba, Hutton, Felicitous, My Hero, Royal Man, Dunkirk and Eastern Monarch, who were racing in a bunch Zenith and Dark Courage being last. The Unicorn ran away from the field near the false rail and over the concluding furlong nothing could get near him, his winning margin at the post being four lengths. Dunkirk ran on well at the finish for second, beating My Hero by a head, and Zenith came from the tail of the field for fourth, a nose away. Felicitous was close up fifth and Hutton was next, clear of Perception, Eastern Monarch and St. Columba, who headed the others. It was a poor Derby and, like many others of recent years, was not a true test of stamina. THE MINOR EVENTS Finance the favourite, was a class above the opposition in the Suburban Highweight and should win again in this class at the meeting. Bosky was always in front the Spring Nursery and at the end com|fortabiy defeated Absence and the [favourite. Poetical. Bosky is a smart colt by Touchwood in M. J. Wadley s stable. | Landsborough, the second favourlite, finished with a solid run to win | the Hadley Hack Handicap from En- [ trancing, Royal China and Reformed. The Trentham filly Admiral's Choice was strongly fancied, but she failed after having the run of the race. Prawns was unlucky to go down by a narrow margin in the Riccarton Handicap, for he got away badly at the start. However, Profane was also a long way back at the home turn and finished with a brilliant late run. Statesman, the favourite, v.,. = . ..ay. handy and got on terms with the leading bunch a furlong from home but could not carry on. He finished fifth.
