“A PENNY FOR THE GUY” WILL BEAN EARLY MORNING CRY

The anniversary of the Gunpowder Flot of November 5, 1605, falls tomorrow, but the celebrations will be held in Wanganui today. Early this morning no doubt there will be the usual cry of “penny for the guy,” or will it be 3d for the guy, in keeping with the advance of prices for fireworks. In Wanganui tonight there will be a monster fireworks display on Cook s Gardens, and at Castlecliff the Sea Scouts will also hold a big fireworks display. The Gunpowder Plot was a conspiracy entered upon by a desperate band of Roman Catholics, in the reign ot James I, to avenge the harsh treatment to which the Catholics were subject in those days. Barrels of gunpowder were secreted in the vaults J underneath the Houses of Parliament, and it was proposed to fire these when the King and his Ministers assembled on November 5. A le’ter of warning to Lord Monteagle led to the discovery of the plot, and Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators were arrested, and lat A r executed. No bonfires will be lit within the city boundaries on a Sunday, accordding to th? citv bylaws. That means that Guy Fawkes' Day must, either be celebrated today or on Monday. The sunerintendent. of the Wanganui Fire Brigade, Mr W. W. Brown, said yesterday that Wanganui had a good reputation for care on such occasions. As a rule fires were made in open spaces and were well controlled. But he asked that if the night were windv that no fires should be lit and he added that in anv case the garden hose should be connected up before th° fire was lit.

Permits had to be obtained to light a bonfire within the city limits, hut it

was not necessarv for a personal call to be made at the fire station to secure one, A telephone call was sufficient. hut that call must be made by an adult, as no permission would he given to a child. Further, the adult took the responsibility for the fire.
