Mr. B. Goldsbury, of Wanganui, has been admitted to membership of the Institute of Opticians of New Zealand. Colonel F. Baker, Director of Rehabilitation, and Mr J. Martin, of the Lands Department, Wellington, wifi visit Wanganui cn November 23 to address a special meeting of the Wanganui RS.A. on land settlement. Messrs N. Neilson and J. O’Neill are not seeking re-election as members of the Wanganui Rabbit Board Appreciation of their services was expressed at yesterday’s meeting of the board.

Mr. M. H. Oram, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Mrs. Oram will arrive in Wellington by fly-ing-boat on Monday morning. They are returning from the opening of the new House of Commons in London.

Messrs A. H. Collins (chairman), T. Thwaites, S. L. Orr (clerk) and R. R. Dawsori (engineer) will represent the Wanganui County Council at a conference of Ward 4 of the New Zealand Counties’ Association at Palmerston North on Monday. Cr. E. T. Hine, who is at present indisposed, was granted leave of absence from yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui County Council. Hopes were expressed for his speedy recovery.

Mr Gladstone R. McGowan, chief surveyor to the Metropolitan Board of Works, Melbourne, arrived in Wellington yesterday by flying-boat from Sydney. He will attend the conference of British Commonwealth and American surveyors which opens in Wellington on Monday.

The Rev. G. I. Laurenson, general superintendent of the Methodist Home and Maori Missions, Auckland, was elected president at the New Zealand Methodist conference at Dunedin. Mr J. C. Chappell, of Auckland, was elected unopposed as vice-president, and the Rev. H. L. Fiebig was elected secretary.

Mr F. W. Spite has been appointed a director in New Zealand of the Federal Steam Navigation Company, of London. Mr. Spite is general manager in New Zealand for the N.Z. Shipping Company, and is a representative of the London Board on the company's New Zealand board of directors. He returned to Wellington last month from a business trip to Great Britain. The Federal Company became an associate of the N.Z. Shipping Company some years ago. Cabled advice has been received in Wellington of the death, in England, of Mr. R. J. Booth, general manager for New Zealand for Messrs. Roberts (New Zealand) Limited. Mr. Booth, who was 59 years of age, had been associated with Messrs. Roberts all his working life, and became general manager 24 years ago. He was born in Auckland and served with the New Zealand Forces overseas during the First World War. On his return to New Zealand he rejoined the firm.

Chairman of the Wanganui Rabbit Board since 1937 and a member since its inception in 1896, Mr A. H. Collins is not seeking re-election this year. At yesterday's meeting he was presented with a case of pipes on behalf of the board by Mr L. A. Mackintosh. He paid tribute to Mr Collins' work for ratepayers, and for the splendid way in which he had carried out his duties as chairman. At a meeting of the Patea-Waitotara Rabbit Board this week tribute was paid to lhe work of Mr Collins and appreciation of his co-operation was expressed.
