BREEZE’S PRODUCE CARGO BRINGS TEMPORARY RELIEF

With no cargo oi’ pr dace shipped to the port of Wanganui since the end of July, supplies of seed and table potatoes and flour in the district were fast approaching exhaustion when the Breeze arrived with a welcome 700-ton cargo yesterday.

The Breeze’s cargo included 3 tons of flour which, while it will not do more than provide limited stocks for bakers, will at least avert an immediate crisis.

Also making up the 700 tons are large quantities of potatoes, grass seed and oats, which have been critically short in the city and district for several months. Again, however, the supply will do no more than temporarily ease the demand.

With several direct shipments during the winter months, Wanganui at. one time looked like overcoming its seasonal shortage of produce, but further shipping arrangements were altered before ample stocks could be built up. The shipment which arrived at the end of July had to tide consumers over until the present shipment was discharged. Relief pected in the middle of August, but. a shipment bound for this port was diverted elsewhere.
