Twelve Murders in 1949. Twelve murders were reported in New Zealand m 1949 compared with 13 in the previous year, according to the annual report of the Police Department. Arrests were made in 10 of the cases. There were two instances of attempted murder, one fewer than in the previous year.

New Zealand's population is steadily approaching the two million mark. According to the latest Abstract of Statistics the combined Maori and European population on March 31, last, was 1,914,120. The rate of shooting accidents during the year ended March 31 this year was disappointingly high, said the Commissioner of Police (Mr. J. Bruce Young) in his annual report tabled in Parliament this week. For the year 65 such accidents were reported. Arms accidents since January, 1935, totalled 724 and of this total 253 were fatal. A great many of the accidents were due to hidden dangers in the mechanism of such weapons as hammer guns and bolt action rifles when they were uncocked, he reported. U.N.I.C.E.F. Appeal

To date. £603 11s 3d had been raised in the Wanganui County for the United Nations Appeal for Children, the county clerk, Mr. S. L. Orr, reported to the Wanganui County Council’s monthly meeting yesterday. Compared with other county figures this was quite a good effort, he said. With the greater part of the work of the voluntary collectors completed, he expected the appeal to raise £7OO from the county by the time it closed. Cr. N. Neilson suggested a letter of appreciation should be sent to the collectors. Music at Races. *
