RAETIHI NEWS

AREA FOR RESIDENTIAL SITES. As a precaution against congestion in residential areas, the Raetihi Borough Council has decreed that in al! future subdivisions of borough properties, any site to be used for house building shall not be less than onefifth of an acre in area. In the early days of the borough, there was an instance of two dwellings being erected on adjoining sections of an eighth of an acre, but it has long been recognised that with so much snace being available within the borough, permission for the ercc +, n-, r r houses should not have been granted. Sites for local State houses are on the basis of one-fifth of an acre and, as these contain a sufficient area for just the essentials of lawn, drying ground and garden, the minimum prescribed by the council should find no opposition. While the issue was under discussion. one councillor, in touching on housing .generally, drew attention to the fact that in various parts of the Dominion much highlv productive land had been acquired for housing requirements, and, with the rising trend of the Dominion’s population calling for further housing and the consequent utilisation of more productive country, he contended that the position would have to be watched. It would appear, however, that Raetihi was unlikely to be affected for many years.

Crippled Children Society. After a period of inactivity extending over four years, the local branch of the Crippled Children Society has been revived and, at a well attended meeting convened by the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Urwin, Mrs. E. McLennan was elected president and Mrs. B. Sandford secretary.

All cases from this district in the intervening years have been attended by the Wanganui branch of the society and, in addition to transport costs being met, such necessities as wheel-chairs and tricycles—all of the most modern design—have been supplied by the Wanganui branch. In addition to this, regular visits to the district have been made by a superintending officer.

In reopening its operations, the branch will be assisted by a fund of £BO, an accumulation over the years. There are at present several cases calling for attention locally, and it is intended that this money be used for these and possible future cases requiring relief. Once fairly established, it is the intention of the branch to lodge an appeal for funds to assist in the building of the children’s hospital proposed for Wanganui. Town Clerk Farewelled.

On the eve of his departure to Eltham, where he has been appointed to the position of town clerk, Mr. G. E. Budd, for three and a-half years town clerk to the Raetihi Borough Council, was farewelled by the Mayor, Mr. A E. Urwin, and members of the Borough Council. In presenting Mr. Budd with a barometer, the Mayor expressed his and the council’s regret at his departure and tendered to him the best wishes of all for success in his new position. Mr. Budd, said the Mayor, had had a busy term of office and he had served the town well. It was distinctly unfortunate that Mr. Budd should be relinquishing the position when the council was confronted wit? many big issues necessitating the raising of new loans. In reply, Mr. Budd said he had enjoyed his stay in Raetihi and he regretted that his departure meant the severance of so many friends. He would always retain happy recollections of his associations with the council members and he would re* member, too, the many kindnesses and hospitality extended to him on his arrival in the town.

The Mayor took advantage of the opportunity to extend a welcome to Mr. H. Queree, of Leeston. who ha? been appointed successor to Mr. Budd. Clash of Sporting Fixtures. September 30 will see a clash of sporting fixtures. The ladies’ golf tourney at Taihape, the men’s golf tournament at Waimarino, the opening of the bowling season, the Main Trunk boxing chamnionships and possibly the closing of the Rugby season, are all set down for decision on that day.
