Davey Jones Responsible For Impressive Guineas Trial On Wanganui Track

(By

“Kestrel”)

Winner of the open sprint, the Flying Handicap, on the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting last Saturday and likely to start a short-priced favourite for the Wanganui Guineas tomorrow, Davey Jones was responsible for the most impressive six furlongs when the final gallops were done on the local tracks yesterday morning.

Other horses to work well included Foxtavia, Wave Crest, Green Rushes, L*iy-By, Garvagh and Phalamin't. No. 1 grass track, with the pegs about 20ft out, was available for the fast work, but the going was dead after the recent, rains, and under the circumstances the times registered were satisfactory.

With the lightweight G. Couchman in the saddle, Davey Jones took 13 1-5 for the first furlong and 38 for the first throe, to run home in 41 1-5 and record 1.19 1-5 for the full distance. The Neptune colt was under a firm hold throughout and appeared keen to do better. The two races he has had at Foxton and Wanganui appear to have effected considerable improvement ’ n h’ s condition and he strips the proverbial “ton” better than at Foxton. There should be no doubt about his ability to run out the Guineas mile whether the pace be fast or slow.

Buchanan picked up Aberdeen near the three furlongs and the pair finished together, Buchanan taking 52 for for the half-mile. Aberdeen won a maiden race at Marton last New Year and also scored in the Kaitoke Hack Handicap at Trentham. He is engaged in the Owen Handicap tomorrow, but his best may not be seen till he has had a race or two. An easy four furlongs was the task allotted to Paddy Joe and Good News, and the pair were doing it well within themselves to register 55. In the Flying Handicap last Saturday Paddy Joe was unable to foot it with the sprinters, but he should be an improved horse over a middle distance later on. Foxtavia continues to show improvement, and there was a lot of merit in his fourth placing in the Marangai Handicap last Saturday. He was going well within himself in leaving five furlongs behind in 1.5 2-5. A six-furlong task which was almost as impressive as that to the credit of Davey Jones was performed by his stablemates. Wave Crest and Gay Gordon, who were under restraint when registering 1.19 3-5. Wave Crest was finishing on in good style in fourth place in the Seafield Hack last Saturday, and the extra distance of the Moutoa Hack Handicap should be appreciated by the Neptune mare. Gay Gordon appears an improved horse as a result of his race in the Marangai Handicap. Parlous and Regency Buck were associated over six furlongs but were not required to do their best, and under the circumstances their 1.22 was a satisfactory effort. Hostess worked at a steady pace and then ran home over four furlongs in 52. The Contact mare is an honest, galloper, but the company she has met so far appears always to be just a little too good for her. The Tiderace gelding Kissane, a candidate for the Trial Hack Handimp, ran half a mile in 52 3-5.

Another Tral Hack contestant in Balagmore was partnered with the maiden Guineas filly Subject over five furlongs, the pair doing it nicely in 1.5 3-5. Balagmore has had limited opportunities, but he may develop into a useful type. Subject, a daughter of Subdued, who was a brilliant Juvenile, has yet to emulate her dam. but she has been sparingly raced and this patient policy k.oks likely to be rewarded. She may find the Guineas beyond but her turn should not be far off. Green Rushes, who showed considerable speed to reach the front at one stage of her division of the Maiden Race, ran live furlongs in company with Flying Cash in 1.5. The Coronach filly appeared to be doing a shade the better at the finish. Finishing well clear of Anthony, Background ran three furlongs in 39. Broiemere travelled at. three-quar-ter pace to the three and came home from that peg in 42. Already had Ihe bettor of Black Majesty in running half a mile in 52 Zala, who ran a respectable race in the Putiki Hack Handicap last Saturday, was doing it. nicely at the end of five furlongs in 1.5 2-5.

The improving Garvagh finished well in front of Blue Smoke at the end of three furlongs, registering 39. Phalamint was not required to du his best when he accounted for Admiial's Lady o 'er half a mile in 54. The Phaleron Bay horse looks like winning his share of open sprin's again this verm. Lord Balloch and Nalaua were compan ons over an easy live furlongs, taking 1.7, and there was little between them at th.? finish. Lay-By conccd cl Polleta, Red Ruler and Good Record half a dozen lengths start, over six fur’ongs, and at the finish had reduced the gap to two lengths wi’h Polleta in front, registering 1.17 3-5. Red Ruler was close up at. the finish, but Good Record v.as further back and was sore afier the gallop.

Ninth. They were moving fast when they went past the barrier and they ran the first three in 40 and came home well in 43 1-5. The time for the full distance was 1.23 1-5. Battle Strife (Tattersail) was going well at th 3 end of five furlongs run in 1.10.

Mission (W. L. Aitken) and Diplomacy (F. Robinson) were home well in 43 2-5 to cover seven in 1.39 2-5. I Diplomacy is to race at Carterton. I Voltaic (R. D. Samson) went with ! Biassed (Furlong) over five in 1.11, I coming home fast in 41 3-5.

' Nakura (R. Dulieu) and Offender (K. Dulieu) sprinted four furlongs from the seven barrier, running the first two in 26 2-5 and the full dislance in 52 2-5. They look particu1 larly well.

j Meteorina and Sal’s Pal were partno red over a mile in 2.0 3-5, the last three taking 44 3-5.

1 The stablemates Garno and Hutton [came home over the last three fur- ■ longs in 44 to complete their mile in i 2.9. i Another gallop over a mile was that I of Relate and Repatriation, who took 1*2.0 1-5, the last three in 44 1-5.

1 Cherbourn and Mesalliance were associated over seven furlongs, taking 1.41 1-5, being clocked home over three in 45. Arcara ran seven in 1.49 4-5, the , last three in 44 3-5, and Mr Thunder improved on this to register 1.43 2-5, the last three in 43 2-5. I Mercury and Coralline went six furlongs, taking 43 over the last three to complete the journey in 1.24. Over a similar journey Anged came home well in front of Minion and Übbriaco to register 1.23 4-5. Admiral’s Derision and D’Urville slipped over five in 1.10 2-5, Eulogette taking 1.13 1-5 and Pick-Up 1.12 2-5. Cosmopolitan and Lovely Rosa took 1.11 3-5 for five, the last three in 42 3-5. Double Scholar. Foxrelio and ParaI graph wore assoc a led over five furlongs. taking 1.11 3-5, the last three in 43. The host half-mile went to the credit of Bonne Affaire and Kentucky ! Boy, who took 54. • Waimoko, Te Kowhai and First Favour ran four furlongs in 56. Onga and Aurora took 57 4-5, and Despot and Golden Sun 59. Red Beau slipped over three furlongs in 42 2-5, and Hy-Spin and Perigee took 41. Zealander (J. Chaplin) ard Hobo (A. G. Waddell) were schooled ovei • six flights of hurdles. Hobo rapped [ one but otherwise the jumping was I good.
