DEBUTANT STAKES WILL BE STARTED FROM NEW BARRIER STALLS TODAY
When the field for the Debutant Stakes lines up today for the opening race of the Wanganui Jqckey Club's spring meeting the new barrier stalls will be used.
This starting point will be voted by owners, trainers and the general public as a decided improvement on that formerly used for the youngsters race. Further, it enables the distance of the race to be just four furlongs, which is accepted as far enough for two-year-olds in their first race with the colours up. The acquisition of a section backing on to Lifiiton Street and the filling in of a small dip leading from the chute on to the course proper has e nabled the club to provide a straight run-out of a furlong for the juveniles. As they will be started from stalls which are about 14ft long there should not be much of the delay which occurs where two-year-olds are sent off from a barrier start. The new starting stalls will also be used for the two hurdle races at the spring meeting, and the Wanganui Cup at the autumn meeting will be started from this new barrier. The horses engaged in the Debutant Stakes, giving ownership, breeding, trainer and barrier draw, are as follow: DEBUTANT STAKES (Of £350; five furlongs) Tony (Hon. W. S.
