High Praise For Wanganui Pianist “I think Wanganui should be proud of this young pianist. This city has already produced a great pianist in Colin Horsley and, while Mr. Collier is not yet in the same class as Mr. Horsley, he will be an outstanding pianist if he works. He is already very promising and it must be remembered he is not yet 20.” With these words the judge, M?. Harry Brusey, of Wellington, announced in the Opera House last night that Maurice L. Collier, of Wanganui, was the winner of the Wanganui Competitions -jciety’s Scholarship awarded to the most promising competitor in the pianoforte age group, 17 to 20 years, at the society's 1950 Revival Festival Mr. Collier was awarded the

scholarship for his performance in winrr mhe chief piano solo class with 173 points out of a possible 200. The other place-getters were Miss Lois Harrex (Westmere), second with 163 .joints, and Miss Audrey Jeram (Palmerston North), third with 161 points.

Sayii -•■it Mr. Collier had played the test piece, the first movement of Walstein, Beethoven Sonata Opus 53, from memory, Mr. Brusey stated that the piece was played with extreme confidence, worthy of a professional pianist. Mr. Brusey said Mr. Collier's playing of Impromptu in F sharp, Opus 36 (Ch*pin), in the own selection of the class, had revealed to him beauties he had almost forgotten. Mr. Brusey said the class had been a fine one and all three placed competitors had made very good showings. VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP
