MATINEE TODAY AND DEMONSTRATION TONIGHT

Tonight’s demonstration concert, which will complete the Wanganui Competitions Society's Revival Festival, promises to be one of the most outstanding events in the city’s cultural life for a long time. It will be preceded by a matinee this afternoon, at which the children’s class winners will be presented in an outstanding programme. To enable as many as possible of the winners to be on the programme the matinee has been timed to start at 1.30 p.m.

Included in tonight’s programme will be two ballets, one a tap and the other “Contrabrande.” The latter ballet is being included at the express wish of the dancing judge, Miss Constance Macdonald, of Napier. The Wanganui Lyric singers and the Kalwhaiki Maori choir are to be on the night programme. There will also be a verse speaking choir from the Sacred Heart Convent, the winning male ouartette (Messrs Healy, McNaught. Edwards and Minnell) and the winners of the soorano, mezzo-soprano and contralto tests (Misses Pamela Barnett, Beatrice Chesswas and Aline Moorman). Winners of both popular song classes, the winner of the men’s test and folk and traditional song, Mr. Raymond W. Stewart, and the winner of the men’s sacred solo. Mr. G. Anderson, have bee n included in the programme. Miss Murrae Ross, vocal scholarship winner, will be heard in a folk and traditional song. M. Collier, winner of the open piano class, Misses Jocelyn Tong and Elizabeth James, winners of the piano duet, and Misses L. Jenkins and M. Russ, who also won a piano duet, and the two winners in the brass instrument sections, K. Jarrett and J. Eyers, have been included as representatives of the instrumental section. Dawn Taylor, winner of the elocutionary tests and several other classes in that section, has bee n included and N. Scott, in a recitation wit* musical accompaniment, and W Doran (boys’ recitation). A Maori song winner is to be heard and Miss Paauline Tozer is to sing her winning operatic number.

Quite a number of dances have been included in the evening programme. Ihn committee recognising that ereat r.ublic support comes from thp dancing section, and several of the dancing competitors have taken Dart in ether sections. Four national dances have been included, a Highland Fling, sword dance. Irish jig. and Sailor’* hornpipe Character dances, skipping dance, tan duo. Greek or classical dance are included, in the main to be danced by the older competitors.

Major trohies v ill be nres°nted a! the demonstration tonight by the president of th? society (Mr. E. Lind). Mr. J. Carr, a member of the executive, will present trophies at the matinee.
