End To Week-end Work Deadlock At Lyttelton Believed To Be At Hand

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PA) —An end of the week-end deadlock that has existed on the Lyttelton waterfront since June 3 is sought through negotiations which took place in Christchurch today

Because of delays in the start on a new watersiders’ hall, men at Lyttelton have been ceasing work at 5 p.m. on Fridays and refusing engagement for Saturday mornings. There was a subsequent imposition of penalties on the men concerned, at the request of the employers, by the Waterfront Industry Commission. This meant that no work, other than the steamer express mails, passengers’ luggage, and livestock, has been handled at Lyttelton on Mondays for the last 33 weeks. Today Messrs. K. Belford, M. T. Holm, W. A. Smith, and W. F. Sillars, representing the employers of waterfront labour, requested a meeting with the executive of the Lyttelton branch of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union. It is understood that a formula agreeable to both parties was reached.
