LONDON, Sept. 1 (Reed. 6pm).— The population of all great cities should be restricted to not more than half a million people, said Sir Thomas Beecham, addressing the Scottish Music Merchants' Association in Edin. burgh.

One could not imagine holding a successful festival in a city like London, said Sir Thomas—it would be like having one on Salisbury Plain. Edinburgh was now the only unspoiled great city in Britain, and for that reason, if for no other, any festivals that were to be held in the British Isles should be held there.
