TODAY IS THE FIRST OFFICIAL DAY OF SPRING IN N.Z.
Today is the official first day of spring, the season, when the poets say, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. Following on a mild winter, the spring season is actually well advanced in Wanganui and spring blooms were much in evidence more than a month ago. The arrival of spring will encourage many home gardeners to dig up their plots in preparation for the sowing of vegetables, but in the suburbs where the soil is light and sandy peas, beans and many other vegetables are now well above the ground. In the districts where the soil is heavy, most gardeners are now just begining to turn over their soil. The ushering in of spring with its warmer sunshine usually sees a stimulation in the growth of grass, particularly on lawns. Mowers, which have spent the winter months in sheds, will soon be much in use. So far there has been no rush to have machines sharpened but with a few days of warm rain and warm sunshine there will be much activity in this direction. Lawnmowers are still in short supply and many old machines will have to do service for at least another year. Seed merchants are doing a steady business in the sale of plants snd seeds.
