BELGIAN COMMUNIST PARTY LEADER HAS BEEN ASSASSINATED
BRUSSELS, Aug. 18.—Two men tonight assassinated the Belgian Communist Party leader, Julien Lahaut, at his house at Seralno, near Liege. Lahaut was a member of the Chamber of Deputies. The two men fired four shots into Lahaut when he opened his front door in answei to their knocks. They escaped by car. Lahaut, aged 65, was a virulent opponent of King Leopold. He caused an uproar in the Chamber of Deputies last week, when he yelled “Vivre la Republique” while Prince Bauuouin was being sworn in as the chief of State.
Lahaut, a former coal miner, has been president of the Belgian Communist party for five years. In 1941 he was arrested by the Nazis and interned in Germany until the libera, tion.
