Man Loses Life When Car Crashes Into Sea
DUNEDIN, Last Night (PA)—A post-mortem examination is to be held on Monday morning to ascertain whether Mr James George Woodhouse, aged 57, of Macandrew Bay, died through heart failure or drowning after his car ran off the road and plunged into the Anderson’s Bay inlet on Saturday night. No other vehicle was involved in the accident, and Mr Woodhouse was alone in his car. The accident occurred about 6.30 p.m., just before the bridge on the Dunedin side of the causeway across the Anderson's Bay inlet. The car, which was travelling from Dunedin to Macandrew Bay, crashed though two reinforced concrete posts, and went down the stone retaining wall into tne inlet. A taxi driver, who was the first man on the scene, waded into the water and recovered Mr Woodhouse from the car. A breakdown van drove to the scene at high speed with Its horn sounding a continuous blast. It had a difficult task in recovering the car. Large concrete slabs were in the path of the hauling ropes, but the car was eventually brought up the embankment at 8.30 p.m.
