Record Swim. TOKIO, Aug. 6: In a second meeting Kironoshin Furuhashi tonight again beat Marshall, swimming the 800 metres in new world record time of 9min. 42.8 sec. Communists Raided in Romo ROME, Aug. 6.—Police flying squads made a surprise swoop on all Com■munist Party headquarters in Rome today in search of arms. Russian Church's Appeal. LONDON, Aug. 5: The Soviet news agency, Tass, reported that leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church today issued a peace appeal to Christians throughout the world. The appeal denounced the “stubbornness with which the enemies of peace continue to prepare for war.”

Lighting of Forest Fires. PARIS, Aug. 5: A 15-year-oid boy was arrested at St. Maxime today after allegedly confessing that he started 16 forest fires. The police said they recognised the similarity of the voice in telephone rings giving news of the fires. They set a trap and caught the boy. Recent fires in the Maures Hills region caused more than £1,500,000 damage. Submarines Off Norway.

OSLO, Aug. 5: It was reported today that two unidentified submarines were recently seen off the coast of northern Norway. Two fishermen s-:-l that on July 20 they saw a submarine surface in Tana Fiord. Three men wearing helmets rowed a small boat ashore. One man asked in broken Norwegian if the locality was always deserted and then the trio returned to the submarine, which disappeared. ■ A nr—il spokesman said today that the N has been investigating a recent report, of a strange submarine near Narvik.
