MANAWATU WITHDRAWS FROM QUADRANGULAR TOURNMENT.

The Manawatu primary schools have withdrawn from the annual quadrangular Rugby tournament with Rangitikei, Wanganui and Taranaki to be held at Raetihi and Ohakune next month. Manawatu has been a member of this tournament since the groups were re-organised in 1943. This move by Manawatu follows the failure of the other three districts to agree to a reduction of the weight limit from 9st to Bst. 71bs., and a growing feeling among Manawatu schoolteachers that too great a proportion of the available funds was expended on the 20 boys sent to the tournament to the detriment of all other schoolboy Rugby players. In place of the quadrangular tournament, the Manawatu Primary Schools’ Rugby Union proposes to organise its own competition to include all local house teams, Feilding and Te Kawau, with about 300 boys participating. COMPETITORS URGED TO DO MORE TRAINING. The need for some efforts being made to make more attractive competition for cyclists at the evening sports meeting was stressed by the retiring president, Mr. A. S. Blackledge, at the annual meeting of the Marton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club on Tuesday night. The cyclists turned out very poor fields during the latter part of the season, said Mr. Blackledge. Speaking of the evening meetings Mr. Blackledge said that the public did not show the interest that was expected of them. "I feel sure that if lite competitors did a bit more training and developed into something worth while, the public might be induced to give better support to the sport,” said Mr. Blackledge. NO NUMBER PLATES AFFIXED ON MOTOR-VEHICLE. For permitting the use of a motorvehicle without number plates affixed, Anderson Motors (Wanganui) were convicted and fined 10s (costs 10s), by Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., in the Marton Court yesterday. Sergeant w. J. Brown prosecuted for the Marton police. Constable E. J. White said that he saw a rental car being driven along High Street, Marton, without a rea: number plate. The driver stated that he had hired the car from Anderson Motors and when he took possession there was no number plate on. Anderson Motors when interviewed admitted there was no number plate, and stated this was due to an oversight. The driver of the car, Donald Francis Newbold, was convicted and ordered to pay 10s costs for using the car without the number plate affixed in the prescribed manner. MOVE TO FORM TENNIS SUBASSOCIATION IN MARTON. A scheme to promote a sub-associa-tion of tennis clubs in the South Rangitikei district was initiated at a meeting of the Marton Centennial Tewnis Club executive recently. This plan visualises the affiliation of local and district clubs nto a sub-associa-tion which could arrange inter-club competitions and provide opportunities for members which are not now possible if i key belong to an unaffiliated boc-’y. Several clubs have already intimated their support, of the proposal and when full investigations have been completed, it is hoped that all particulars will be available for discussion by clubs at their annual general meetings. INFORMATIVE TALK ON KARI-TANE-STEWART HOSPITAL. An excellent and informative talk on the Karitane-Stewart Hospital was given by Mrs. H. D. Robertson, president of the Wanganui Plunket Society, at the recent annual meeting of the Marton Branch. Mrs. Robertson spoke of the splendid work of the hospital and said this work touched very nearly all the branches from New Plymouth to Palmerston North and Napier. Mr. F. Purnell presided over a ; god attendance, which included mem- ; hers from all the sub-branches. The ! president, Mrs. C. A. Tidy, welcomed ; those present and specially mentioned I the gratifying number of your moth- | ers whose presence was always pa-r- -' ticularly desired by the committee. ; Supper and informal talk concluded a pleasant evening. A feature was ; the beautiful basket of flowers, prej sented by Mrs. Stevens, a bouquet for i the patroness, Mrs. Purnell, and a l beautiful shoulder spray for the guest | speaker as well as for the president and secretary. VV.D.FJ - . MEMBERS OF TUTAENUI TO VISIT FACTORIES AT P.N. The members of the Tutaenui branch of the W.D.F.F. found their recent visit to Wanganui factories so interesting and enjoyable that they have decided to spend a day in Palmerston North visiting similar institu- , dons there. i They planned to visit Libertyland in ' the morning and the Glaxo factory in the afternoon. Advice has now been received, however, that the Glaxo factory is at present undergoing altera- ; tions and the manager advised a postI ponement until a later date. It was decided, however, to proceed with the | visit io Libertyland on Wednesday. I July 26, and members are asked to meet outside the factory at 1.15 p.m. The July meeting of the branch was held at the residence of Mrs Duckworth, Mrs. F. Brice presiding in the absence of Mrs. Oliver. A short account of the W.D.F.F. conference and 25th anniversary recently held in Wellington was given by Mrs. Gray. Members were interested In hearing the details of the birthday party held to celebrate the silver jubilee and of the presentation of life membership to 17 outstanding members. ■ Mrs. Forrester gave a very interesting account ot her experiences oi | life in Raratonga and showed samples i of the native crafts, sucli as weaving, 1 pictures of the island and lagoon, and . pearls from Tcurhyn. She was acI corded a hearty vote of thanks. A very satisfactory collection of clothes for the Cook Island hospitals was brought and will be sent forward in response to the appeal made a few weeks ago. The August meeting will j be held at Mrs Gray's home.
