Rules Of Athletic Club Altered To Allow Later Annual Meeting

In the interest of the club and the sport, the Marton Athletic and Cycling Club on Tuesday night passed a notice of motion altering the period of the annual general meeting. The present ruling states that the annual meeting shall be held not later than July 31 each year, but this ; has now been amended to read “not later than October 31 each year.’ The mover of the motion, Mr. C. Christopher, considered that competitors were not interested in athletics during July, a month when winter sports were more often discussed than summer. That was demonstrated by the fact that onl v one competitor was present at the meeting. October was considered < the more opportune month to hold I the annual meeting. One open meeting was held during the year which was most successful for the competitors, but rain early in the evening had an adverse effect on the gate takings, stated the annual report. Competitors from Ohakea attended 1 most of the sports meetings and did much to build up the fields in the athletic events. The club was indebted to these competitors for their support, stated the report. The most successful member of the club was Gordon Bromley, who won the New Zealand marathon championship for the third time and competed most creditably at the British Empire Games. Another outstanding runner was David Robertson, who represented the West Coast (N. 1. Centre at the New Zealand junior championships held at Christchurch. The club held a most successful social evening on the night of the final sports meeting, when prizes won by the various competitors were presented. A dance held later showed a small profit.
