Grave Concern At Wellington Education Board’s Finances

WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA).With a deficiency of £8677, the Wellington Education Board is facing a future loss of £lOl5 monthly. A resolution that the committee’s report on the financial position of the maintenance account be received in committee was defeated. Grave concern over the board’s predicament was expressed at today’s meeting. In addition to the present debit and future recurring loss, the board has commitments for work already started of £13,332. A further £10.105 is listed for work not yet started. Monthly charges to keep the board in existence amount to C 153.1, as against an income of only £516. To place the board in a com fori able position, £34.000 is needed. A specie effort is to be made by a direct, approach to the Minister of Education (Mr. Algie) to obtain £15.000 as a special grant. An annual grant of £35,520 is received from the Education Department. It was stated that the Auckland and Canterbury Boards were finding themselves in similar circumstances.
