Large Fields Engaged At Te Awamutu Fixture But Quality Is Lacking

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special).—Following after the threc-day Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie, it is not surprising to find a drop in the quality engaged at the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting at Te Awamutu tomorrow, though as far as numbers go the fields are of capacity proportions.

There does not, appear to he much prospect of divisions being I avoided in the three events divided. the Hairini Hack and the two Arapuni Hack Handicaps. On the turning track, which will be soft, speed is the main factor. The totalisator double today will be run on the Woodstock Stakes run over ten furlongs, and the Orakau Hurdles, but some surprise may be expressed that the club did not make an alteration in the order of events to make the Kihikihi Handicap, the open seven, the second “leg.” Wonder Boy, topweight in the Woodstock Stakes, will appreciate the drop from the class at Ellerslie, but his chances with a hurdle rider up will have to be taken on trust. High Glory’s form early in the current season was good, but he has not raced for some time. Kilfenora finished second to Caber Fae in the President’s Handicap over eleven furlongs on the middle day at Te Rapa last month. On that display she may be one of the toughest to beat. Frantier Mac will be racing on his home track and that will be a factor in his favour He should be ready now after his recent racing. Bedivere was the winner of the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellerslie at the Pakuranga meeting last August. He ran some solid races afterwards and was then given a spell. Since resuming he has done enough racing to commend him to backers, especially if he is handy at the home turn. There are several lightweights with good chances, including Ashfield, Grand Shepherd, The Bat, Robert Leigh and Cornishman, and a couple of horses balloted out, notably Roiata and Napredak, must be given consideration if they get back in the field. It is not a strong field that will line up for the second “leg" of the double, the Orakau Hurdles. Two locallyowned and trained candidates in Foxlyn and Sareel may be the actual favourites. Opposition should be provided by Forest Ranger and Fianna Fail, with Leigh Hark likely to spring a. surprise. The Waikato owner who races Te Paerata and Te Tui seems to have an excellent chance of capturing the Kihikihi Handicap, and the pair will make an attractive bracket for place bettors, though Te Tui has had a run of failures. The hardest to beat may be Moonee Valley, who headed all but Pierre in the big tnile at Ellerslie last Saturday when carrying overweight to make her impost 7.7 J. Today she comes in at her original weight, 7.0. The class in the W. G. Park Memorial Steeples is below that seen out in crdss-country events at Ellerslie, but The Trader, unlucky last Saturday, and Sandy, winner of the King Country Steeples at Te Rapa, must be given good prospects. Engaged in hack events are consistent sorts in Big Notes, Tactful Lad, Robert Craig, Luminous and Valeana, some of whom are running out their hack nominations. Horses likely to show up in their respective engagements include:— Andrew Kay Hack Steeples—Diamond King, Trench Mate, Crail. First Arapani Hack.—First Division: Big Notes, Picardy. Second Division: Valeana, Jildi Jow. W. G. Park Steeplechase—The Trader, Sandy, Modern View. Woodstock Stakes.—Bedivere, Kilfenora, The Bat. Second Arapuni Hack—First Division: Glen Moray, Robert Craig. Secoi'd Division: John Silver, Heroa. Orakau Hurdles. —Sareel, Foxlyn, Forest Ranger. Hairini Hack Handicap.—First Division: Tactful Lad, Brer Mar. Second Division: Luminous, Gametact. Kihikihi Handicap.—Cimtulla, Te Paerata, Driving Creek.
