Foxbridge Stakes As Waikato Spring Classic

The Waikato Racing Club has decided to,institute a classic event to be known as the Foxbridge Stakes on the second day of its November meeting, states “Martian” in the “Waikato Times.” No decision has been yet made as to the form the race will take. The owner of Foxbridge, Mr. L. S. Otway, of Cambridge, has consented to donate a trophy to accompany the stake for the running of the first Foxbridge Stakes. For the past nine seasons Foxbridge has been the champion sire in New Zealand, and last season his progeny won £55,350 in stakes. He is at present leading in the sires premiership this term. The total winnings of the offspring of Foxbridge in New Zealand and Australia to the end of the 194849 season amounted to £466,288, easily beating Martian’s 25-year-old record of £373,231. Foxbridge, at 19 years, is still in the best, of health and it is impossible to estimate what his ultimate total in stakes will be. In the 1946-47 season progeny of Foxbridge won the record amount of £80,620, which was also a British Empire record for winnings in one year. The largest sum to the credit of any sire in the British Empire is £553,158, won by the progeny of St. Simon, but it should be remembered that the winnings of St. Simon's progeny were for first moneys only. It seems certain that St. Simon's total will be exceeded by Foxbridge in the not far distant future.
