Educational And Social Value Of Shows Stressed By President

Although at the present time the , association was finding it difficult to get public support for the show, this was not peculiar to the Marton association, said the newly elected presi- , dent of the Marton A. and P. Associa- . tion, Mr N. L. Shelton, at the annual meeting on Wednesday night. This . lack of support was being experienced ,by all the smaller associations throughout the country, he said. The committee, however, had confidence in the useful service and educational and social value of the snow, and to tliis end would work hard in the coming year to make the Marton show more popular with the public, said Mr Shelton. The committee would endeavour to revive that interest which in a district such as Rang:tikei, should not be lacking In agricultural and pastoral affairs. Mr Shelton was nominated for the position of president by the retiring chairman, Mr E. H. Simpson. In returning thanks for his election, Mr Shelton said he would do his best for the association and desired to place on record the good work achieved by Mr Simpson during his term of four years as president. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr E. B. Gordon, M.P.; president, Mr N. L. Shelton; vice-presi-dents, Messrs P. W. Briant, A. C. Vile, A. B. Marshall, and J. D. Simpson; treasurer, Mr F. R. H. Brice; auditor, Mr D. B. Sladden; hon. vet. surgeon, Mr A. Seymour; general committee, Messrs A. S. Coleman, J. W. Griffin, R, W. Haise, H. C. Little, B. R. Simpson, E. H. Simpson (all retiring members who were re-elected), and Mr A. Henwood. The resignation of Mr R. Meads on account of ill-health was accepted I with regret. I PRESBYTERIAN MODERATOR TO I VISIT MARTOX TOMORROW ( An event of some importance to j Presbyterians In the Marton district is the visit tomorrow of the Moderator of the General Assembly, the Rt. Rev. R. S. Watson, M.C., E.D., M.A. Mr Watson is to conduct the service iin St. Andrew’s Church tomorrow j evening, when his subject will be j “The Church and the World.” At the conclusion of the service a social hour i will be held in St. Andrew’s Hall when members and friends will have an opportunity of meeting Mr Watson. Marton residents will be interested j to know that Mr Watson was brought .up in Feilding and he was ordained as a minister in Marton. YOUTH SUNDAY AT METHODIST CHURCH. Youth Sunday will be held throughout New Zealand by the Methodist Church tomorrow. At the local church, the young people will be taking part at both services . Special singing has been arranged and a tea for young people will be held in the Sunday School at 5 p.m. The evening service will be preceded by a sing-song at 6.45 p.m. “It’s Grand to be Young,” is the title of Rev. H. Prowse's mornI ing address and m the evening he will | speak on “How to know you are a Christian.” Friends, parents and visi- , tors are invited to attend and help in these youth celebrations. HUNTERVILLE NEWS School Football HUNTERVILLE, Last Night (OC>. —Whe n the Hunterville School football team met Marton last week a fast and exciting game resulted in a draw. For Hunterville Lynn Shindler scored an unconverted try and Bruce Coleman kicked a penalty for Marton. The game ended 3-all. The Hunterville junior team was badly beaten by the Marlon juniors, the score being: Marton 18, Hunter!ville nilI After the games the teams were entertained at afternoon tea and Shaun Cameron, the Hunterville captain, thanked the Marton teams for the games and the refreshments, and Bruce Coleman, the Marton captain, suitably replied. BASKETBALL. The Hunterville school basketball team played a Marton school team last week. After a close and exciting game Marton came out the winners by 18 points to 15. Afternoon tea was served by the Marto n girls. SCHOOL COMMITTEE At the monthly meeting of the Hunterville Consolidated Seiiool Committee the acting headmaster, Mr. D. N. Mowatt reported that the school roll stood at 260 and that there had been a 94 per cent, attendance. He also reported that Mrs. S. Smillie had commenced her duties as cookery mistress and Mrs. J. Green had been acting as a relieving teacher. The headmaster was asked to convey the congratulations of the committee to the staff and pupils with regard to the visits to Taihape and Marton by the school football and basketball teams. Messrs H. G. Wilson and C. Lambert reported on their visit to the school and submitted various items requiring attention. It was agreed to make a contribution to the Rangitikei Primary Schools’ Rugby Committee toward the expenses of the forthcoming primary schools’ football tournament. PERSONAL. Mr. D. Anderson, a postmaster unattached. who has been doing supervisory duties at Taihape, has oeen appointed postmaster at hunterville. He will succeed Mr. F. C. O. Griffith, who retires at the end of this month. Mr. W. S. Bilbrough, of the Taihape District High School, has been appointed headmaster of the Hunterville Consolidated School. Mr. Bilbrough will be taking over his new duties as from September 4.
