SENSATIONAL THEFT OF STATUE OF COSTA RICA’S PATRON SAINT

PANAMA, May 16.—The daring theft of the million dollar statue of Our Lady of Los Angeles—Costa Rica’s patron saint —has brought Costa Rica to a virtual state of siege. Travellers arriving here say that the jewel-encrusted gold statue was stolen on the night of May 12 from the basilica at Cartago. The thieves murdered the church watchman and escaped with the two foot tall statue, as well as money and jewels from an alms box.

Large rewards have been offered by individuals and business houses for information leading to Ihe recovery of the statue. The frontiers have been closed and the police are making continuous raids on hotel rooms and private homes, while people are slopped and searched in the streets.

The Government has decreed three days of national mourning.
