TURAKINA NEWS Softool Affairs

TURAKINA, May 15 (OC).—There was a poor attendance at the recent biennial householders' meeting, which was held in the school, to elect a committee for the ensuing two years. Owing to a decrease in the school roll only five members were elected. Those elected were: C. L. Perry (chairman) re-elected; R. B. Jurgens (secretary), B. Cowper, R. Fergusson and J. Lumsden. A letter of appreciation of services rendered to the school is to be sent to two retiring members, who did not seek re-election, Messrs W. Stent and R. H. Glasgow, w’ho has been secretary for a number of years. An Anzac service was held at the school on April 24, the guest speaker being Mr. G. M. Lethbridge. A wreath was laid on the school monument by the two prefects. A letter of thanks has been sent to the Wanganui Rugby Union for the donation of a Rugby football. The head teacher, Mr. Bird, is to convent a public meeting for the purpose of forming a Parent-Teachers* Association. A tentative date has been set for Tuesday, May 23. The school baths committee has already held two meetings in its furtherance of financing the material necessary for the construction of a learners’ pool. SCHOOL BATHS. At a further enthusiastic meeting of the school baths committee the programme was mapped out for a Baths Week, which is tho be held during the week, May 22 to 27. A committee was set up to organise a monster stock drive in the district to be held on Tuesday, 23rd, and an offer of Mr. C. E. Papps to donate the whole of the procceeds of a picture I programme to the fund was accepted i A good night’s entertainment for Wednesday, 24th. is assured. In an all-out drive to reach the objective, a Paddy’s Market is to be held in the Town Hall on Saturday, 27th, All persons are requested to support this worthy effort by giving their help and assistance in order that the baths be ready for next swimming season.
