Communists Demonstrate, Shouting: "Hands Off Malaya"

SYDNEY, May 16 (Recd 10 pm).— About 50 Communist demonstrators clashed with the police and Sydney Town Hall officials tonight when they attempted to force their way into the Lord Mayor’s reception to delegates to the British Commonwealth Conference on south-east Asia. The demonstrators tried to march into the Town Hall as members of the delegations were arriving. They carried banners inscribed “hands off Malaya!’' and shouted at the delegates.

Sxtra police who were rushed to the Town Hall and City Council officials formed a cordon to keep demonstrators out of the hall. One council employee was slightly injured. No one was arrested. The police stated the demonstrators planned to rush Mr. Malcolm MacDonald, Commisioner General for South East-Asia, but mistook Lord MacDonald, leader of the British delegation, for him. They began their demonstration as Lord MacDonald arrived, but did not reach him.
