JAPANESE STUDENTS DEMONSTRATE AGAINST U.S. OCCUPATION
TOKIO. May 16 (Recd. 10pm).— Orfe thousand Japanese, Chinese and Korean students today demonstrated in Tokio against American interference in education. Some of the most violently antioccupation placards seen in Japan since the surrender were carried at what is believed to have been a Com-munist-inspired student rally. The placards read: “Drive the imperialists back across the Pacific.’’ “Expel the imperialists.” “Members of the Government that first used the atomic bomb are war criminals.” Occupation officials compelled the students to withdraw some placards. The placards were mainly directed against General MacArthur’s education advisor, Dr. W. C. Eells. The demonstration followed an incident at Tohoku University, Sendai, Northern Honshu, on May 2, when students shouted down Dr. Eells following a purge of alleged Communists from the teaching institutions in Japan.
