City Lighting System There was no reason why the city street lights should not be switched on when darkness fell, stated the Wanganui-Rangitikei Power Board in a letter before the Wanganui City Council at its monthly meeting last night. The letter was in reply to a complaint that the street lighting system was not switched on till after dark, the board advising that the attendants had been asked to exercise a little more care. Future of Elevator. The Wanganui City Council’s intention to continue operating the Durie Hill elevator was confirmed at the monthly meeting last night when it adopted a report from the Transport Committee. A sub-committee, consisting of the chairman (Cr. Jack), the Mayor (Mr. Rogers), and the engineer and manager (Mr. Row) was empowered to place an order for rectified equipment to an amount of approximately £l2OO. The rectifier will be necessary when the present rotary converter is discarded. House for Caretaker. “If we agreed to this proposal we would be held up to ridicule all over New Zealand. We have far too many new schools and classrooms urgently needed to provide a dwelling for a janitor.” This statement was made by Mr. N. Bromiley at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board when the committee of the Raurimu School applied to the board for the provision of a residence for a fulltime caretaker. On the motion of Mr Bromiley the application was declined. Shortage of Work. “The staffs of the outside branch have almost caught up with buildings coming through the draughting room and the Education Department and, unless urgent attention is given to the issuing of additional new grants by the department, we will be unable to find sufficient work for the number of our staff,” Vie architect (Mr. L. S. Barsanti) reported to yesterday's meeting of the Wanganui Education Board. The architect said the workshop was progressing under extrame difficulties and unless some assistance was granted by the department for improvements to the building, he was afraid production would be impeded seriously. Okehu Afforestation. Acting on a recommendation made jointly by the Reserves and Works Committees, the Wanganui City Council, at its monthly meeting last night, decided that pending an inspection of the Okehu catchment area by councillors, no further action be taken in the meantime regarding afforestation there/ After the inspection, the city engineer (Mr. Row) will submit a further report for consideration by the council when the estimates for the current financial year are being framed. At the council’s April meeting, Mr. Row submitted a report on afforestation work carried out at Okehu over a period of years. The report was subsequently considered by the joint committees.
