Minister Of Lands In Favour Of City Council Afforestation Scheme

The Minister of Lands (Mr Cor bett) had said that he was favourably disposed to all afforestation schemes proposed by local bodies or private concerns as he believed that such schemes were more advantageous than to have all forestry projects tied up in State departments, said the Mayor. Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., reporting at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui City Council last night on a deputation which waited on the Minister in Wellington recently. The deputation discussed with' the Minister the question of acquiring Crown lands in the coastal belt between Kaitoke and the mouth of the Whangaehu River for afforestation purposes. “The deputation presented a full case of the history of negotiations with the Government for the acquisition of land for this project,” said the Mayor. In reply to the representations placed before him, the Minister assured the deputation that he was in favour of the desire of the council to establish an afforestation project lon coastal land. 'The land which he had in mind for vesting in the council was that comprising some 870 acres, extending from thq mouth of the Kaitoke Stream to th’e western boundary of the land owned by the Tourist and Development. League. “Mr Corbett thought that as a first step in the scheme envisaged by the council, it would bo wise to vest the former Tourist and Development League's property in the council, and in that event the council would assume full responsibility to present bondholders. Should it be found impossible to obtain possession of this area, the Government would favourably consider an alternative area. “The Minister stated that he held the opinion that as a first phase of the scheme the existing partly afforest atod area should be taken over and developed,” the Mayor said. The report was received and the council decided to discuss the afforestation question fully in the near future.
