WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WESTBOLKNE. Westbourne W.I. held its April meeting on Tuesday when visitors and members were welcomed by the president, Mrs. F. H. Uttley, who presided over a very good attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs. M. Vinten and relatives in the passing of her brother. A prayer for peace was read. A new member, Mrs. Wallace, was welcomed, also Mrs. Woodley, who has been holidaying in Wellington and Masterton. Members were invited to prepare the year’s programme. It was decided to have a bring and buy at the birthday meeting and Mrs. Tunniciiffe kindly offered to make the cake for the ninth birthday. I Mrs. Christie read the president's I letter from Home and Country. Mrs. H. West, read an amusing article from an English paper. Musical honours were given, as Mesdames J. Burns, G. Suddaby and W. Clemenston each received a gift from the birthday chest. , Next month being Members’ Day, .Mrs. J. Burns apd Mrs. Swan were appointed president and secretary respectively. Afternoon tea was served under the spervision of Mrs. Allwood (convener) and helpers. Mrs. Atkinson ,sang a bracket of I songs accompanied by Mrs. Crawford and Mrs. Norman gave a series of numbers on her auto harp which were much enjoyed. Sheaves of chrysanthemums were presented to the artists, also to Mrs. Cantwell. Mrs. C. Honeyman, passed the vote of thanks. Mrs. K. Prouse was in charge of the trading table. Competitions, judged by Mrs. Smith and Mrs, Wallace were won as follows:—Best bloom, Mesdames Honeyman 1, J. Burns 2, Christie 3. Cocoanut ice, Mesdames Atkinson 1, K. Prowse 2, Swan 3. Bed socks, Mrs. Prowse 1, Mrs. Swan 2. It was reported that 401bs. of fat for Britain had been collected, and a food parcel sent to the Link Institute in England. OHINGAITI. Mrs. Peacock presided at the April meeting, the president being absent owing to a family bereavement. A fair number was welcomed, and the meeting opened as usual with the Creed, and Ode to Friendship. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs. Stent and family, and members stood in silence for two minutes. Apologies were received from several members who were unable to be present. A. very hearty vote of thanks was passed' to Mr. McGuckin for auditing I books, a task he has so willingly done I for a good number of years. I The roll call, a gardening hint, was well responded to, some very good and useful hints being given. The deleI gate to the council meeting in Taihape on April 28 will be Mrs Peffers, and Miss M. Stent it is hoped will go to Christchurch for the July conference. If Miss Stent is unable to go, Mrs. Peacock will be our delegate.

Mrs. Peacock read an article from the health journal, and Mrs. Cooper gave the motto, Laugh a little more at your troubles and less at your neighbours. Mrs. Florence and Mrs. Cooper hostessed a'most enjoyable afternoon tea, after which a happy meeting was concluded with the National Anthem.

Competition Results: premier flower, Mrs. Worsfold 1, Mrs. Mercer 2; jar of fruit, Mrs. Worsfold 1, Mrs. Maher 2; best vegetable, Mrs. Worsfold 1, Mrs. Cooper 2.

Durie Hill Croquet Club. To mark the closing day of a very successful season, members of the Durie Hill Croquet Club held a bridge and 500 afternoon on Tuesday, April 18. The many friends and visitors were welcomed by the club president, Mrs. A. C.. Bourgeois. The bridge prize was won by Mrs. Breen, the 500 by Mrs. L. Shepherd and the cake competition by Mrs. J. Hammond. Prize-winners for the season’s competitions were: “A” championship, W. E. Wilson; "A" Yankee, Mrs. C. Partridge; “B’ championship, Mrs. N. Rowe; B and C handicap, Mrs. A. Rowe; Margaret Hamilton Shield, Mrs C. La Roche; runner-up, Mrs. E. Armstrong.
