AFRICAN LANDS MUST BE DEVELOPED TO AID WORLD FOOD SUPPLY

LONDON, March 22.—Doctor Bunting, chief scientific officer of the Overseas Food Corporation, told members of the House of Commons last night that the world's existing farmlands could hardly provide enough food for the 3,000,000,000 people who will populate it in 50 years time. He said it seemed inevitable that the red earth regions of East and Central Africa must be developed to meet world food needs. Dr. Bunting emphasised the urgent .need for cultivating large new areas, of which East and Central Africa were the most promising. Explaining the inadequacy of the present farmlands for the future, Dr. Bunting said at least 70 per cent, of the world’s food was being produced by peasants under “most backward social and technical conditions.”
