Cream Price Increased For Winter Months

WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA)— The retail price of cream is to be increased from 8d to 9d a quarter-pint during the winter price period from April Ito September 20. The increase is made by u price order gazetted this evening. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Bowden) said today that the present level of milk and •ream prices has been possible only by the payment of substantial subsidies, and the Government did not regard cream as a commodity which should be subsidised at the expense of the general taxpayer. Milk and cream cost more to produce in winter than in summer, but for a number of years it had been a practice to allow the price of cream to remain constant throughout the whole year and at the same time to charge a higher price for milk In winter than in summer. The retail price of cream would be increased by one penny a quarter-pint during the winter price period, which corresponded with the normal winter increase in the milk price. The price order makes corresponding increases in other quantities of cream, and a pint purchased during the winter period will now cost the purchaser 3s.
