RESTRICTION ON LEAVE FOR 18-YEAR-OLD RECRUITS
Youths entering Army camps with the first draft of 18-year-olds recruits in May will not be given full weekend leave and overnight leave will be restricted to special cases. Normally they will be allowed out of camp on Saturday evenings and on Sundays, but not later tnan midnight. Only about half the recruits will be given leave at the one time. Announcing these arrangements an Army DepiA’tmQnt spokesman said the restrictions on overnight leave might be waived in the case of a recruit who had a home to which he could go. The Army did not intend to allow the youths to roam about aimlessly in the large cities. The recruits were young and the Army authorities had a responsibility toward them. Many of them had only recently left school. The officer also said that the Army would not grant leave to the recruits during the first two week-ends they were in camp. This period coincides with the six weeks’ basic training which the youths will undergo before commencing their corps or specialisttraining. Arrangements for succeeding week-ends include sport on Saturday afternoons, to be followed by leave until about midnight. Leave will also be granted all day on Sunday. _
