CLEAN-UP SCHEME ADVOCATED AT WAVERLEY MEETING

WAVERLEY, Last Night.—The beautification of a waste area in Waverley’s main thoroughfare and the establishment of a periodical garbage collection were matters debated at the recent meeting of the Waverley Chamber of Commerce. The waste area referred to was that opposite the post office, and the scheme involved weed clearing, planting of rose beds, the erection of a suitable fence to shelter the area from the wind, and the installation of seats for the use of the public. The chamber resolved to defer the proposal until the New Year. In the debate on rubbish collection, the question of interesting local carrying firms was discussed. The difficulty was that of obtaining regular contributions toward the cost by the residents who made use of the collection. ® After the meeting had approved the idea In general it was left to the council to make further investigations. It was suggested, that there existed in Waverley a good opportunity for a woman’s hair-dressing business. The chief obstacle was lack of suitable premises, and the council was instructed to make inquiries in this direction. General and recreational facilities at the beach domain were discussed and it was pointed out that while the road and other facilities had been improved by the Domain Board, much could still be done to make the playing areas more attractive. It was decided that a deputation wait on the Domain Board to offer the assistance of the chamber in this direction. Applications for several new members were approved, and Mr. Hillmer drew attention to the fact that among these was that of the Waverley-Wai-totara branch of the R.S.A. He welcomed their representative, Mr. W. H. Dickie, and expressed the view that the support of the R.S.A. would be valuable and most welcome. Arrangements were finalised for the Christmas party for children to be held today. The chairman reported that the response to a canvass of businessmen for funds for the party had been most gratifying and that the total amount donated to date was £56.
