Death Penalty In Ceylon Not To Go
COLOMBO.—The House of Representatives has rejected a motion to abolish the death penalty in Ceylon —l2 voting for and 32 against. Mr. H. Sri Nissanka (Independent!, who sponsored the motion, said that people in “Little Lanka" should set an example to the rest of the world. In the present enlightened age mankind was not justified in exacting a "tooth for a tooth,” and an “eye for an eye." Mr, C. Suntheralingam. supporting it, pleaded for a punishment suited to the genius of the people of Ceylon. As the East was not phlegmatic like the West, the "Buddha Dhamma must replace the English Dhamnia,” he added.—Reuter.
