Dominion Executive Meeting Of S.P.C.A. Held In Wellington
Wanganui was represented at the recent meeting of the Dominion executive of the S.P.C.A. in Wellington by Mrs A. McPhail. The first aid to animals handbook was discussed and it was agreed to. send copies to branches after some i slight revision had been made. Delegates were asked to supervise their respective districts with regard to the use of live hares and pigeons in coursing and gun-dog training respectively. The question of better transport of animals on trains and ships was discussed, and the co-operation of those in charge is being sought. It was suggested that horses being carried on trains should be kept as far from the engine as possible, to avert unnecessary fear. During the afternoon delegates attended a demonstration of a newlyimported electrical cabinet for the painless destruction of cats and dogs. The device is a simple one and was approved by Dr. Girr, of Auckland, while on a recent visit to London, and on her recommendation the Auckland society has decided to purchase one. The Wanganui delegate, while favourably impressed with its effectiveness, considered it was too expensive and quite unnecessary for limited local conditions.
Owners of pets who intend spending the holidays away from home are re- ' minded of their responsibility to these I animals. The S.P.C.A. inspector is Mr W. Harris.
