EXPLOSION IN U.S. MEAT WORKS
More Than 30 Killed NEW YORK, Dec 14.—Between 30 and 35 pei'sons were killed and more than 100 injured in an explosion at a Swift Company meat packing plant in Sioux City today. Some estimates placed the number of the injured as high as 200. The explosion occurred in the office building of the plant. Escaping gas hampered rescue work. Firemen equipped with gas masks found some bodies hanging from the twisted steel girders of the building. All persons in the city with Red Cross experience were called on to aid in tending the injured. Five hundred National Guardsmen were mobilised to assist in rescue operations, while mobile construction cranes throughout the city were rushed to the wrecked building to disentangle steel girders. The plant employed more than 1000 workers.
