SURVEY COMPLETED FOR SPECIAL RANGITIKEI RIVER RATING AREA

MARTON, Last Night (SR).—Survey work for the completion of a special raSng area associated with a scheme for controlling thej meander channel of the Rangitikei River from Rewa to the sea, a distance of 36 miles, had been completed, stated the chairman, Mr K. A. Williams (Marton), in his annual report to the Rangitikei Catchment Board, adopted at the meeting today. “A considerable volume of office work is still required before the engineering side of the scheme will be completed,” the chairman added. “The fullest expedition is being given to this with a view to having the scheme completed for rating purposes in the 1950-51 rating year." Referring to work actually carried out on the Rangitikei River, the chairman stated that a considerable amount had been done. This consisted mainly of bank protection work of approximately 100 chains and island clearing of about 94 acres. Channel improvement work was undertaken in five localities.

“With the exception of minor damage to bank protec ion work caused by freshes in the river before the work consolidated, all the jobs undertaken can be claimed as a success.
