ORDINARY AND INFERIOR WOOL SELLS WELL AT CHRISTCHURCH SALE

I CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PA) | —The first Christchurch wool sale oi I the season was held today when catalogues to: ailing 31,500 bales were su. - I muted on growers' account to a full j bench of buyers, 'ihe official report jsays the wool opened up in good coni dition, being generally sound and well jgrown, but owing to the exceptionally :dry autumn and winter most of the clip:, were carrying some dust and the !proportion of really showy clips was smaller than usual for this sale. A large percentage of the offerings was over 50’s quality and, as usual at this sale, there was a big offering 0.. hogget wools. Some very good merino clips were included, the bulk of which were from the Marlborough district. Competition was slow bat keen and fairly well spread. The offering was suitable for Continental interests and the bulk of the line fleece wool and pieces went to their bids. America was in the market for specialty wools and Bradford took a good weight of the stronger types. As this was the first line wool saie of the season, comparison with previous sales is not possible, but crossbreds generally were fully up to the level of recent North Island sales. The best fine halfbreds and merinos were hardly up to last season’s best rates, especially for hogget types, but ordinary and inferior grades were selling particularly well at very satisfactory prices and showed a definite advance. All classes of piece wools met with excellent competition and at limes brought nearly as much as corresponding fleeces. Owing to the large offering the tale was not completed till a Late hour, but practically the whole offering was cleared at auction. The next sale is fixed for February 18 and ihe catalogues for this fixture are already filled. Wools are now coming to hand for the third sale on March 31.
