AGA KHAN CRITICISES PHOTO FINISHES

LONDON, Dec. 14 (Recd. 8.10 pm). “The photo-finisn can be a source of great injustice,” the Aga Khan told leading racehorse owners at the Gimcrack dinner at York last night. He was not present, but his speech was read for him by Lord Zetland. “In the old days, when the judge relied on his eyesight, there was a sound measure by which the winner was separated from the second, namely, by a short head. Today with photo-finishes even one, two or three inches are shown. A mere nose or a lip may make the better and more valiant horse the loser.” The Aga Khan’s speech went on to say that a ridiculous situation arose when the chest and body of one horse was in front of the other yet .the position of the head decided the race against it. “A horse that raises its head can lose the prize and mislead future generations of breeders. In America photo-finishes have two lines instead lof one, and anything within the two is considered a dead-heat. I think that is the only fair way,” concluded the Aga Khan.
