BETTER ATTENDANCE AT SWIMMING MEETING.

There was an attendance of 25 at the adjourned annual meeting of the Marton Swimming Club—a decidedly more encouraging response than that received by the club a week earlier, when only four atteinded the meeting and it was adjourned for lack of support

William Francis Linklater and Stanley Bernard Waters, won the 1949 Young Scholarships. These scholarships, which are tenable for two years, are awarded annually by examination to pupils in the sixth standard of the Marton Junction and the Marton District High School. FINE FOR EXCESSIVE WIDTH OF VEHICLE IX)AD The load could bo a definite danger to passing motorists, said Traffic Officer W. C._ Shaw, in the Marten Court yesterday morning when prosecuting Thomas Duncan Glasgow, farmer, Turakina, for operating a vehicle with a load which exceeded the maximum of eight feet in width. The presiding justices, Messrs A. J. B. Sicely and Alex Stuart, imposed a fine of £2 (costs 12s). The traffic officer said that defendant was driving a vehicle and was carrying willow stakes from seven to eight feet in length. They were tied crossway on the vehicle and as a result of not being tied properly had become loos? and drifted to a wiath of about 12 feet. Defendant, who pleaded guilty, said he had come across rough country and the slakes had worked loose.
