Fines Imposed For Operating Unlicensed Motor Vehicles

Three charges of driving unlicensed motor vehicles on roads were heaid m the Marton Court yesterdoj morning, presided over by two Justices of the Peace, Messrs A. J. B. Sicely and Alex Stuart. Traffic Officer W. C. Shaw prosecuted in each case. John Edwin Fergusson, farmer, Feilding, was convicted and fined £1 (costs 12s) for operating an unlicensed vehicle at Halcombe. Traffic Officer Shaw said that defendant used the vehicle on the farm, but when accosted he was driving along the road with fencing material on the back of Ihe truck, intending to repair a road fence. Defendant said he did not think it was necessary to licence a farm vehicle. The traffic officer pointed out, however, that farm vehicles could be licensed at a very low cost. Another Halcombe farmer, Hamish Alexander Hogg, on a similar charge, was convicted and fined £1 (costs 12s). The traffic officer said that the farm vehicle was being driven to a garage in Halcombe for repairs at the time. Mr. G. H. Graham (Feilding) who appeared for defendant, pleaded guilty and said that it was not a case of malicious use of an unlicensed vehicle. Riding an unlicensed motor-cycle cost John Robert Ivan Williams, labourer, Marton, 30s (costs 12s). On further charges of using a motor-cycle without a warrant of fitness and for having no current driver's license, he was convicted and fined 30s (costs 10s) on each charge.

Mr. Shaw said that defendant had his motor cycle stripped down for racing purposes and he was carrying a pillion rider at the time. When asked for an explanation, defendant said he was taking the chance of riding the vehicle home without being caught. Defendant had since taken out a driver's licence, added Mr. Shaw. PERSONAL. WORK IN MARTON BOROUGH Reporting on work in the borough carried out last month, the overseer, Mr. W. R. Brant, stated at last night’s meeting of the Marton Borough Council that 11 water leaks on mains had been repaired, ten water and six sewerage connections installed and an eight-inch stop valve installed at the Tutaenui filter station. The swimmin : baths had been repaired and whitewashed. The manholes and inspection chambers at Centennial Park and Hau Street had now been completed and the trench filled in. The footpath in Crofton Road, from Toia Street, to Mill Street, and Station Street had boei tarred and sanded. Alexander, York and King Streets and Golding's Line had been patched, sprayed with colas and chips anjlicd. Work had been carried out at Marton Park, Kain Avenue, Rest Room and baths grounds. The Tutaenui reservoir was holding 25ft. of water and the lower reservoir 14ft. of water.
