MEN OF WAIROA MOUNTED RIFLES WHO SERVED IN SOUTH AFRICAN WAR

An interesting roll of men of the Wairoa Mounted Rilles (Waverley and district), who served with the New Zealand Forces in the South African war, 1899-1902, has been compiled by Mr. Fred Johnston, formerly of Waverley, now of Wanganui. This roll interested quite a number of those present at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Wanganui South African Veterans’ Association. The names included in the roll are given below, and the last known place of residence. Several of the men have passed on and that is also noted:

Price (deceased), Johannesburg, South Africa; Privates C. Edwards (deceased), Patea; R. McDonald, still in Waverley; O. Riddell (deceased), Masterton; James Walker (deceased), Cheltenham; Farrier J. Barty (deceased), Pahatunui; Corporal J. Hogg, D.S.M. (present whereabouts unknown); Privates Sid Butcher, Australia ;George Mann, Whakatane; C. Levin, South Island.

Served with the 2nd Contingent: Lieutenant Jack Grimes (deceased), South Africa; J. E. Thurston (deceased), Feilding; George Hilliar, Whenuakura; Dick Godfrey (deceased), Bunnythorpe; Dan Thurston, living in Foxton; R. Cameron (whereabouts unknown); Jack Irwin, last heard of over Gisborne way; Sergeant Jim Davidson, in Auckland; Corporal Willit, whereabouts unknown; Farrier Jim Elmslie, killed at Gallipoli; Albert Davis (deceased), Nelson.

With the 3rd Contingent: F. K. M. Russell (deceased), Wanganui; Joseph Ross, Waikato.

With the 6th Contingent: C. M. Levin, T. Turner, Waikato.
