Manpower In Ship-Building
LONDON, Dec 11.—Sir Mark Hodgson, chairman of the Northern Regional Board for Industry, speaking at a Press conference, refuted recent statements that there is likely to be large-scale unemployment in the British ship-building industry next year.
Sir Mark said there were sufficient orders on hand to guarantee full employment for another two years. He pointed out, however, that the normal peace-time labour force engaged in ship-building was about 90,000, and that at present 129,000 were employed. This meant that eventually about 39,000 men might have to be found work in other industries. —Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent.
