Workingmen’s Club Cricket; Taihape Defeat St. John’s A friendly cricket match between the Taihape Workingmen’s Club and the St. John’s Workingmen’s Club was played at Wanganui on Sunday and resulted in a win for Taihape by 19 runs. Taihape made 140 runs (three batsmen retired) the chief scorers bein'* Crichton 44 (retired) and C. Reid, 35°(retired). Wanganui were all out for 121. PERSONAL. The death occurred on Friday night of a well-known and highly respected citizen of Taihape in the person of Mrs Julie K. Ryan, wife of Mr. A. M. Ryan. The late Mrs. Ryan attended a children's Xmas party in the Town Hall, Taihape, on Friday evening, and on returning home she suddenly collapsed and died. She had been in poor health for a considerable time. Deceased was held in the highest esteem by a large circle of friends and her sudden passing will be deeply and widely regretted. AMATEUR ATHLETICS. A team representing the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club visited New Plymouth on Saturday to compete in the West Coast (N. 1. championships, held at Pukekura Park. The team left Taihape on Friday evening at 8.45 p.m. and spent the night in Wanganui. The weather was line and the track in good order. Colin Crimp was second in the 100 yards and 220 yards championships. N. Pearce was placed fourth In these tv events, and also finished in the final c| the 220yds. hurdles. Ron Jenkins was third in the mile to the New Zealand champion, N. Bates (Stratford) in the good time < 44>min. 25 l-10sec. The lOOyds. was won in 10 3-osec. and the 220yds. in 23 3-10 sec. N. Pearce ran second to L. O'Keefe, of Palmerston North, in the record time of 26 8-10 sec., which clipped 3-5 sec. off the previous record. In the handicap cycling events John Caulcutt won his heat in the half-mile cycle, but was unplaced In the final. C. King and H. Donald also competed, the latter being placed third in a heat of the mile cycle handicap and finished fourth in the final. Several, supporters accompanied the team to New Plymouth and spent a most enjoyable week-end. Mr. Whai Pine was manager of the team, which consisted of C. Crimp, N. Pearce R. Jenkins (athletics), C. King, J. Caulcutt and K. Donald. The following also made the trip: Mr. and Mrs. R. Goddard, Misses E. Edwards, G. Stevens, J. Thurston, D. Gibb, Messrs G. Parkin, R. Cooksley, B. McSweeney, J. Infield. Visits were paid to places of interest in New Plymouth, including Fitzroy, Rugby Park, the port, and a general tour of the city and suburbs. At the conclusion of the sports at 10 p.m. the Taihape visitors attended a dance in the Agricultural Hall. ESCAPED PRISONER. A prisoner, Gerald Smith, escaped from the Levin training farm at 10.20 p.m. on Sunday. He is described as a Maori aged 16 years, height sft. 10in„ dark hair, wearing grey sports trousers, sports coat, brown overcoat and sizes. He is in possession of a I icycle.
