Pair Of Native Pigeons Nesting Near House

The native pigeon, or kereru, is now a rare species of New Zealand bird life. Most of the birds remaining keep to their natural habitat and very few venture out of the bush. However, a pair of these birds which nested within two chains of a house in the Upper Waitotara district last year, are again nesting in a pinus insignis tree about four chains from the house. The birds collected twigs for a nest from a young rata tree. They gathered twigs from the same tree last year. The pair began building on October 10 last, and the female bird is now sitting. At Okoia three pigeons are daily visitors to a willow tree which is right, up against a dwelling house. The birds are quite tame and people can walk about under the willow without disturbing them.
