FIRST PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY OF GIRLS’ PREPARATORY SCHOOL

The first prize-giving ceremony in the history of the newly-established Christ Church Preparatory School for Girls in Wanganui was held recently in the Parish Hall. There was a large attendance, indicating the keen interest being taken in the school. The entertainment, presented by the pupils, under the direction of the staff, included plays, songs, choral speaking and eurhythmies. These items were much enjoyed by the audience. The second half of the programme consisted of an opening address by the chairman of the School Governors, Rev. J. R. L. Higgs, the principal's report, and an address by Mrs. Higgs, who later gave away the prizes. The principal, Mrs. F. Robinson, reported that the school had grown, during its first year, from a roll number of 52 to 63 pupils, and many more were enrolled for next year, 1950. The chairman stressed the need for a school hostel to accommodate the growing number of country pupils seeking admission to Christ Church Preparatory School. The following prizes were distributed:— GLiss prizes.—Standard I: Alexa Cameron. Standard II: Dale Hackett. Standard III: Susan Saunders. Standard IV: Susan Webber. Special prizes.—Progress: Janet Armstrong. Needlecraft: Heather Strachan. Arts and dramatic art: Julia Turner. Dramatic art: Kim Lewis (junior), Prudence Earle (intermediate), Anne Latham (senior). Weekes Memorial Prize: Susan Lewis. St. Alban's Cup and prize: Juliet Earle. House Cup: Nicholls House.
