DEALERS IN CARS MUST COMPLETE ALL PAPERS, SAYS S.M.

A warning thit ear dealers and others must complete the registration tapers and all formalit es when exchanging ownership oi motor-vehicles was given by Mr S. Preston, S.M., when dealing with a case in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yeslerday, where a car Had changed hands without the required notification being sent to the deputy-registrar of motor-vehicles.

Frederick Joseph Robinson was fined £lO, costs 13s, on a charge of aiding and abetting in the commission of an offence, namely, the using of an unregistered mcvr-vehicles on a highway. He was also fined £lO, costs 13s, for aiding and abetting in the offence of failing to notify the disposal of a car.

Hans Heinerich Wilhelm Maas, charged with failing to notify the disposal of a car, was lined £2, costs 13s. Senior-Sergeant F. Culloty, who prosecuted, told the Court that Maas disposed of his car by way of making an exchange 'with Robinson, who was a dealer in Marton. The registration papers were also exchanged and Maas completed the formalif.es lor the car he had taken over, but failed to notify the disposal of the other vehicle to Robinson, as he was required to do under the regulations. Robinson subsequently sold this car to another man.

The magistrate said that it was clear that Maas was an innocent party who disposed of a car to an experienced motor dealer. He had failed, however, to see that the transfer ot his car to Robinson, who had been before the court previously on similar charges, had been registered. It was essential that the proper procedure be followed because the registration papers showed the complete history of the car and this was one way in which the public could be protected, said the magistrate. “Anyone buying a car should inspect the registration papers ana find out who the previous owners were,” the magistrate added.
