Former Bank Clerk Admits Theft Of £400

WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —A former bank clerk was charged in the Magistrate's Court today with the theft of £4OO. He pleaded guilty and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. Accused, through Mr. W. J. Stacey, was granted bail and the suppression of his name. In evidence, William John Viles, aged 82. farmer, of Main Road, Apiti, said that in 1945 he applied for £lOOO worth ol Government stock in the Victory Loan. He paid three instalments, two of £3OO and one of £4OO. The money was transferred to the Reserve Bank at Wellington from Feilding. He had received only £9 interest which amounted to interest on £6OO. He had not received a £4OO refund. A statement by accused to the police was produced in court. In this accused said he retained some of the cash on the application for stock and covered it up by manipulating the remitting warrants received subsequently from other applicants. He wished to make full restitution to the bank. Apart from the £4OO, there were no other amounts involved for which he was responsible.
