HUSBAND AND WIFE WHO ILL-TREATED A YOUNG GIRL
NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night (PA). —Thomas and Reta Kha, husband and wife, were found guilty of the manslaughter of Naki Kira, aged 19, at the conclusion of their trial in the Supreme Court at New Plymouth today. They were remanded for sentence, Reta Kira being allowed bail. Thomas Kira was adjudged guilty of manslaughter by assault and Reta Kira of manslaughter by failing to provide the girl with the necessities of life. Naki Kira, who was Thomas Kira’s sister, lived with him and his wife and eight children at Ararata Road, near Hawera. She died there on June 6. Evidence of ill treatment of the girl observed by them was given by a number of witnesses. Medical evidence attributed death to blood poisoning from widespread sepsis associated with injuries and neglect. Doctors who examined her after death found that though she was 19 she had the body of a girl of 13. She was emaciated. There was no food in the digestive tract and in the doctor's opinion she had had none for several days. At no time did she have medical attention.
