HYDRO-ELECTRIC EXPERT PAYS TRIBUTE TO WORK ON N.Z. SYSTEMS

WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA).— Dr. J. L. Savage, the eminent American engineer who was brought to New Zealand at the invitation of the Government to review the hydro-electric construction programme now being undertaken, has submitted his report. Th;s was announced by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser). “The report, which is an extensive one, has just been received, and the Government has not yet had the opportunity of considering it in detail. "Although Dr. Savage has made some suggestions in regard to design and improved methods of construction, In general the report is a very favourable one,” said Mr. Fraser. “Dr. Savage’s impressions can be summarised in the concluding paragraph of his report, in which he says: ‘lt is my opinion that the Ministry of Works engineers in co-operation with the engineers of the State Hydro-Electric Department, are Investigating, designing and constructing important hydro-electric projects in New Zealand along similar and comparable lines to those in practice by the Bureau of Reclamation, Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Army Engineer Corps in America. With this in mind, it has been especially gratifying, to work with New Zealand engineers and it is a pleasure to express my confidence in their general technique and approach to the problems now being undertaken.’ ” The Minister of Works (Mr. Semple), the Commissioner of Works staff of the Works Department, and the Hydro-Electric Department should all be congratulated on this laudatory approval from Dr. Savage, than whom there is no greater authority on hydro-electricity schemes in the world, said Mr. Fraser.
